The Provisional Licence
To attend a driving course or theory test, you must possess a provisional LGV/PCV licence. This is in addition to your normal car licence even though the details are entered onto the same document.
To obtain this licence you will need to have a vocational licence medical examination. This Can be organised through your GP or any clinic that conducts this type of medical. Do ask about the cost at the time of booking as prices vary tremendously at different places. The enclosed GP clinic is intended as a guide only and details given should be checked at time of booking. You will need the form D4 (enclosed in the introductory pack), when attending your medical.
When your medical has been completed you will need to fill in the provisional licence application form D2 (enclosed in the introductory pack)- The form is quite straightforward except for section 3 "The licence you want". You must tick the box marked 'C' for LGV under medium/large vehicles or 'D' for passenger carrying vehicles, we advise you to tick both. This is so that if you wish to train for the other category at a later date, it saves you having to pay for the medical again.
If you Hold the old style paper licence you will need to send form D2, enclosing also your passport (Or birth certificate) along with your current driving licence, this is now free.
If you hold a valid UK passport you will need to send this with your application, as it is the preferred method of identification. It means that you will not have to complete section 5 to verify your photograph. It also ensures a speedy return of your provisional licence.
If you do not have a valid UK passport, you can still apply for a photo card licence but you will need to enclose your birth certificate (a photocopy is not acceptable)- You will also need somebody who con complete sections for you and countersign the back of your photograph. There is no additional fee for a photo card licence and these are now the only style of licence be issued.
There is a premium checking service available at the post office for a small charge, this means that passports are checked by official staff then handed back immediately. Please phone us if you would like to use one of our recommended Doctors. These Doctors charge half the recommended price of medicals.
